DM Dots - Deployment Guide
Learn how to effectively deploy DM Dots with step-by-step instructions and best practices for optimal performance.
Table of Contents
This guide walks you through getting your DM Dots up and running, step by step, and links to the detailed articles for each step. Choose the path that matches your setup:
| Your setup | Path |
|---|---|
| Digital Matter gateways + Telematics Guru | Path 1 |
| Digital Matter gateways + your own platform | Path 2 |
| Third-party BLE gateways | Path 3 |
Before you start
- You need a Device Manager user account with two-factor authentication enabled.
- Your DM Dots assigned to your organisation in Device Manager (your DVC).
- An Android or iOS device with the latest version of the Digital Matter BLE Provisioning Tool
Path 1: Digital Matter gateways + Telematics Guru
1. Check your gateway is compatible and update its BLE firmware
See DM Dot Family - Integration → Supported DM Gateways.
2. Enable DM tag scanning on your gateway
See DM Dot Family - Integration → Configure Your Gateway on Device Manager, and the BLE scanning guide for your gateway. Make sure the scan length suits your Dots’ advertising interval: see Choosing Bluetooth® Scan Length.
3. Check your Dots are in your DVC
How to find your Dots in Device Manager and move them between DVCs -soon
4. Install the BLE Provisioning Tool and log in
See Digital Matter BLE Provisioning Tool → Logging In.
5. Activate your Dots
Scan the carton QR code, update the firmware and apply a template with Shipping Mode set to Off.
See Digital Matter BLE Provisioning Tool → Activating your DM Dots.
6. Install your Dots on your assets
See also Technical Drawing - DM Dot Tag, Glow, and Sensor and Understanding BLE Range.
7. Set up your Dots in Telematics Guru
Enable the Tags functionality for your organisation (Admin > Organisation > Edit Organisation), then add each Dot as a tagged asset.
See Tags in Telematics Guru.
8. View locations, telemetry, reports and alerts
See Tags in Telematics Guru and Bluetooth® Tag Alerts on Telematics Guru.
Path 2: Digital Matter gateways + your own platform
1. Set up your gateway and activate your Dots
Follow steps 1 to 6 of Path 1.
2. Choose how to receive your data
Device Manager can forward your data as raw TCP, or as JSON over HTTPS or MQTT. See Choosing an Integration Strategy.
Note: Fusion devices, such as the Manta Fusion, only support HTTPS JSON integration.
3. Create a Connector and set it on your gateways
See Creating Connectors and Setting Connectors. You need the Connection Manage permission in Device Manager.
Note: Dots do not connect to Device Manager themselves. Their data is sent inside the records of the gateway that detected them, so the Connector must be set on your gateways.
4. Interpret the Dot data
Each gateway record includes the Dots it detected, identified by their MAC address and tag type: 21 (Dot Tag), 24 (Dot Glow) or 22 (Dot Sensor). See DM Dot Family - Integration → DM Dot Payload Interpretation.
Path 3: Third-party BLE gateways
Currently, the Dots only broadcast in DM Format. We have future plans to allow Eddystone and iBeacon broadcasting. If this is essential to your planned deployment, please contact Digital Matter Support.
1. Activate your Dots
Follow steps 3 to 5 of Path 1. Dots in Shipping Mode only broadcast a minimal identification frame, without battery, temperature or sensor data.
2. Configure your gateway to read the Dots
Configure your gateway to scan for BLE advertisements and forward the manufacturer-specific data of the Dots to your platform.
3. Identify the Dots
Dots advertise a name made of “DM0” followed by the last 5 hex digits of their MAC address (e.g. DM0A1B2C). See DM Dot Family - Integration → Digital Matter Dots Frame Specification.
4. Decode the data
Multi-byte values are little-endian. See DM Dot Family - Integration → Digital Matter Dots Frame Specification.
