Data Field Support Supported Devices How do I stop being billed for a device?

To facilitate data transfer to Geotab, our Device Manager transforms elements of this data and pushes it to Geotab using Geotab's DIG API Endpoint. We use a specific 'Geotab DIG' Connector to achieve this.

Geotab Integration Summary:

  1. Devices log and upload GPS data (as per their tracking configuration) to Device Manager.
Tracking configuration for Battery-powered and Vehicle-powered devices.
  2. Data sent to the Device Manager by the device is directed to the DIG Geotab 3rd Party API.
  3. Data appears in Geotab for the Geotab Serial.

Integration Process:

  1. Devices are provisioned on Device Manager. Partners can use their MyAdmin credentials or provide Digital Matter with their Geotab ERP number. Device Manager provides a Geotab Serial number for each device.
  2. In Device Manager, a DIG connector is assigned to the devices. This tells Device Manager to send data to Geotab.
  3. In the Geotab portal, create assets by adding the Geotab Serial number/s (provided by Device Manager).

1 - Provisioning Devices on Device Manager

Provisioning using your Geotab ERP account number

If you're having difficulties provisioning devices, you can share your Geotab ERP number with the Digital Matter support team — we can assist with provisioning if needed.

However, we strongly encourage partners to learn how to provision devices using their own credentials. This ensures you're able to complete the process independently, even outside DM support hours. Our goal is to empower you to work efficiently and confidently, whenever you need.

Contact your Geotab Account Manager if you do not have an ERP number.

Provisioning using your credentials -

  1. Login to Device Manager. Contact Digital Matter support if you do not have an account.
  2. Search for the device(s) in question.
  3. Click the Spanner Icon to provision one device. Or select multiple devices and use the Bulk Device Operations button.

4. Go to Integration -> Set Geotab Serial.  If you cannot see this option, contact Digital Matter support.

5. Set the Provision method to “Provision Device” and enter your MyGeotab myadmin credentials in the pop-up.
Make sure that your account has the following permissions - Device_Admin, DIG-Access and Third-Party-Integrator.

The server name can usually be left as ‘some.server’. The default server, service.geotab.com:81, will be used. Leave the Product ID as is.

6. Click OK to provision the device(s) with Geotab serials.
It can take a few minutes for this process to complete; depending on the number of devices you are provisioning.

7. To view the Geotab serials, change to the “Detail” view.

You may need to scroll to the right to see the  “Geotab Serial” column.

2 - Setting the DIG connetor on Device Manager

Once you have seleted the devices on Device Manager, you can use the Bulk Device Operations button to set the Connector.

Select the DIG Connector option from the dropdown and press OK.

If you are using an Edge device, Barra Core or Manta Fusion, pick the “DIG Connector Edge” option. For all other device types, pick the “DIG Connector Non-Edge Option”.

More instrutions on setting the Connector can be found here.  If you do not see a DIG connector on Device Manager, contact Digital Matter Support.

3 - Creating assets on Geotab

Once you have provisioned devices on Devices Manager, copy the Geotab Serials and add them to the MyGeotab interface. Contact Geotab support if you are unsure how to add devices.

Other Important infomation:

What data is sent to Geotab?

Data Field Support

NB: Not all data fields reported by Digital Matter devices will arrive at Geotab, as they need to be specifically catered for in the DM → Geotab integration.

The Dig Connector only forwards select data. If any fields you require are missing on the Geotab side, contact your local DM representative to discuss options.

  1. Standard Tracking data is sent most regularly (or according to how the device is setup):
    1. Position data: Lat, long, Speed and Heading infomation.
    2. Battery Voltage. Also, backup battery and external powered voltages for vehicle powered devices.
    3. Digital Input data which are mapped to Geotab's Auxiliaries (used for alerts and reportnig) -
Input or Status Name Digital Matter Location Mapped to here in MyGeotab
Ignition Digital Input 0 Ignition
Input 1 Digital Input 1 Aux 1
Input 2 Digital Input 2 Aux 2
Input 3 Digital Input 3 Aux 3
Input 4 Digital Input 4 Aux 4
External Battery Status Status Flag 2 (TRUE if external power is present) Aux 5 (TRUE if external power is NOT PRESENT)
Internal Battery Status Status Flag 1 (TRUE if internal battery is GOOD) Aux 6 (TRUE if internal battery is NOT GOOD)
Input 7 Digital Input 7 Aux 7
Input 8 Digital Input 8 Aux 8

Note that Aux 5 and Aux 6 have "special meanings", and are not just mapped through from the digital inputs.

2. The Device Statistics (also known as Device Profile Counters) report long-term, low-frequency counters for performance monitoring and prediction. This is available on our battery-powered devices, only. These are usally sent once per day.

Counter Name Geotab Checkmate Code Unit
Battery Voltage Code 5 millivolts
Battery Percentage Code 9 battery percentage x 100
Successful Uploads Code 10 none (count)
Failed Uploads Code 11 none (count)
GPS Freshen Attempts* Code 12 none (count)
GPS Freshen Time* Code 13 seconds
Trips Code 14 none (count)

*Freshen refers to the GPS module staying on after it has obtained a fix to download a complete set of ephemeris data. This speeds up subsequent fixes.

How do I stop being billed for a device?

The Geotab System bills for active devices. In order to avoid being billed for devices that are no longer active, the following steps must be done -

1) Terminate the device in the MyGeotab interface. Contact your Geotab Account Manager if you are unsure.
2) On Device Manager, set the Connector to ‘None’ (OR make sure the device can not connect eg. remove power or deactivate the SIM card).
