The Griffin Air has both a full on-board GPS module and a Wi-Fi scanning module for indoor location scans. When using the GPS, the device resolves its cardinal position straight away. When using Wi-Fi scanning, the same location mechanism as our ‘Edge’ Devices can be used. This allows for resolving an inferred GPS position through the use of the Location Engine or your own lookup solution.

      Location Preferences

It is possible to switch between the geolocation methods used for trip tracking and heartbeats. This can be set to use either/both GPS or/and Wi-Fi. A fallback method can also be set so that if the primary mechanism does not succeed (in the form of either a successful GPS fix or useful Wi-Fi access points), the alternative method will be used temporarily.

The System Parameters for this are as follows:

Some use case examples are as follows:

      1.  GPS Only: You are confident that the asset will mostly have good GPS signal and you are not too concerned about precise indoor locations in the event that it doesn't.
      2.  GPS with Wi-Fi: An asset that spends most of its time outdoors and occasionally finds itself in a warehouse with poor GPS coverage, but you would still like a precise location when it moves indoors.
      3.  Wi-Fi and GPS: At any given moment, an asset could have poor GPS coverage because it finds itself moving in and out of dense urban spaces. Both GPS and Wi-Fi scanning are always used so that no time is wasted if one or the other fails.
      4.  Wi-Fi with GPS fallback: GPS Movement Trips are not required. When the asset travels away from urban areas, you will have a better chance of knowing its whereabouts.
      5.  Wi-Fi Only: GPS Movement Trips are not required and you have very strict power saving requirements. You do not expect the asset to move away from urban or semi-urban areas for long periods of time.

These parameters are used in the event that Wi-Fi geolocation is enabled, either as a primary or fallback mechanism. Configuration of the Geolocation tab follows the same parameter settings as our Edge devices. See Fallback Mechanisms in Edge Devices - Location Scanning Parameters.
