This article applies to cellular devices.

How long will it take the device to upload after a network error?

The Digital Matter cellular devices will store records in their non-volatile flash memory, meaning that if there is a network error, records will not be lost.

After the network starts to work again (back in coverage, network error passes, etc) how long will it take the device to upload?

Some devices will attempt to stay connected to the server under certain conditions. This will result in low latency after the network restores. These devices and conditions include:

  • Wired cellular devices (Dart3, G70, G120, etc) will attempt to stay connected while on trip
  • Battery-powered cellular devices (Remora, Oyster, Yabby) will attempt to stay connected while in trip in recovery mode.

If a device is not attempting to stay connected, then it will connect periodically. This will result in latency as great as the periodic upload period:

  • Wired cellular devices (Dart3, G70, G120, etc) will connect on their heartbeat period when out of a trip. The default time for this is 60 min, but it is configurable.
  • Battery-powered cellular devices (Remora, Oyster, Yabby) will usually connect periodically, but the timing varies between in-trip and out of the trip:
    • Out of trip, it will connect on its heartbeat period. The default time for this is usually 12 hours. So latency could be up to the heartbeat period.
    • In the trip, it will connect on its "in trip upload" period. This varies by device type and may be disabled in some cases. For example, an Oyster Cellular with default settings will connect every 30 min while in a trip.
